Ski mountaineering / Back country excursions

These are the first ski mountaineering and backcountry excursions that involve not overlong ascents on foot or with skins followed by long descents through secluded valleys far away from the confusion of the ski slopes.

The routes

Bella Valletta (La Thuile)
ascent time: 20 minutes
This is a particularly beautiful route due to the unspoilt area it crosses. The descent is down various valleys that all meet up at the same point. The only disadvantage is climbing up to the crest for about 20 minutes, but maybe this is what keeps it so perfect. Ideal for snowboarders due to the natural half pipes.

Crochues – Berard (Chamonix)
ascent time 45 to 50 minutes divided into two stages.
This circuit is right in front of the French side of the Mont Blanc Massif. Two ascents: one on foot and one on skins creating a circuit covering technically very satisfying skiing.

Saint Rhemy – Colle del Grand Saint Bernardo – Etroubles and the Super Saint Bernard’s off piste. ascent time about 3 hours
This is one of ski mountaineering’s classic routes. The ascent is usually solitary up to the pass and it’s beautiful hospice, followed by the descent to the Swiss ski lifts that take you to a spectacular valley and on to the border with Italy. Good for snowboarders.

Combe Varin (La Thuile)
ascent time about 3 hours.
The route follows the steep slopes all the way to the summit followed by a unique descent where the snow is almost always powder on a hard base. Really good for snowboarders and usually deserted.

Pointe de La Pierre (middle of the Aosta Valley)
ascent time about 3.5 hours
Easy and stunning route with a descent on undemanding slopes. A unique and unforgettable ski.
